What is counselling?
The NHS defines counselling as a "talking therapy that involves a trained therapist listening to you and helping you find ways to deal with emotional issues." The aim is to gain an understanding of your thoughts, emotions and behaviours. It allows you to process the past, present and future in a confidential, non-judgmental space.
What is the difference between counselling and psychotherapy?
Counselling helps support existing personality structures. Psychotherapy is more in depth and facilitates long term changes; a reconstruction of personality or psyche areas.
Becoming a psychotherapist involves completing a degree in counselling to a level 6 standard. At Landeg-Jones Counselling, all of our therapist are qualified level 6 psychotherapist. We simply use 'counselling' to advertise our service as this is a more widely known term for therapy.
What happens in a counselling session?
Each session is, essentially, a problem-solving session. You describe your current situation, and your feelings about it, and then the therapist uses their expertise to assist you in trying to resolve that problem so you can move closer to having the life you wish to have.
What can therapy help with?
Counselling can be useful for anyone who wants to explore the way they're thinking or feeling further, as well as for anyone experiencing a problem or issue they are keen to resolve. People may choose to speak to a therapist because they feel they cannot speak to their other half/friends/family about such personal issues, or they may simply wish to speak to a professional with an objective viewpoint.
What are the benefits of counselling?
Counselling/therapy can help you understand yourself better and the way you think, which will ultimately help you develop a clearer understanding of your problems. The more armed with information you are, the easier it gradually becomes to navigate your way through any difficulties you are facing, so that eventually you can come out the other side feeling more positive. Counselling/therapy can also help you better understand other people's points of view, which can shed light on the way you interpret words or actions.
